Birdhouses for your Outside Decor
More than two dozen North American birds nest in birdhouses
Lure birds to your yard by adding a birdhouse or two. One birdhouse per quarter acre is advised. Birds are territorial, so you do not want to overcrowd. Birds need food, water, and shelter. Place feeders in the vicinity of birdhouse, but not to close to house. Birds need water, if your outside decor includes a fountain, birdbath, or pond, this need is met. Bird houses may be attached to a post, building, or tree. Houses should have drainage holes in the bottom to allow rainwater to escape and small ventilation holes around top sides. If you find that special birdhouse to add to your outside decor and it doesn't have the the correct requirements, the changes are easy to make. Drill small holes where ever needed. Birds are happy and you are too! Face house north or east, this keeps birds from overheating during the hot summer afternoons. When bird evacuate for the winter, this is a good time to properly clean out the houses. Empty old nesting material, and before they return make sure no spiders, bees or wasps have moved into house. If you have intruders, carefully remove them. Houses are ready for a new season!
